Olive Oil for Beauty Treatments Mon, June 29, 2009
I recently was on Better.TV talking about Beauty Treatments From Your Fridge. One of the great products I talked about was beauty with olive oil. I found some additional great beauty uses for olive oil below…. this amazing product is so versatile and inexpensive!
Using olive oil in your beauty routine
by Diya sood
We all know that olive oil is wonderful and healthy for us to cook with, but what about it’s other uses? Truthfully, olive oil is another main ingredient in several beauty products you can buy on the shelf. See for yourself how you can make your own skin cocktails and save a little money at the same time.
1. A mixture of 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup vinegar, & 1/4 cup water used as a night cream will make your skin glow. The olive oil softens and moisturizes and the vinegar lightens discolorations, kills bacteria and loosens dead skin cells. Splash water on your face before applying.
2. Olive oil can be used as cleansing cream if your skin is dry.
I use olive oil, honey , glycerine, lemon juice and limewater to make my nightly cleansing and moisturizing lotion. One drop of original Magie Noir is for the exotic flavor at night or let’s just spray!
3. For a facial, wet face thoroughly, then massage olive oil into your skin. Use about a half teaspoon of sugar and scrub your face with that, then wipe off gently with a warm, wet cloth until the sugar is all gone.
4. Use olive oil on your feet with clean white cotton socks. Helps to soften up you feet and it absorbs better than baby oil.
5. It seems when you pour olive oil out there is always a drip, so wipe it up with your hand and rub it in to your elbows. It has wonderful softening properties.
6. Use olive oil as bath oil. Two to three tablespoons will do the trick.
7. Use olive oil for your hair. Not only does it condition, but it also gets rid of the frizz. Put a small drop into your palm & then rub both hands together & apply it to dry hair. I normally do a olive oil, egg and yoghurt massage every Sunday and my hair looks fine, feels fine!
Just a few of the many creative uses for olive oil in your skin care routine. Not only is it cheap, but it will go a lot further than most products you can buy. Have fun and be creative.

Self-Care for Moms 101 Thu, June 11, 2009
We all need some tips to help us get organized and find balance. Mia Redrick, a Mom Coach gives us some good “balance” tips below.
Self-Care for Moms 101 by Mia Redrick, Mom Coach
Is your life balanced? What does that mean?
Do you often say, “There are not enough hours in a day” or “I just wish I had more time”? If you have answered yes, then this may be a sign that your life is out of balance. How do you find balance in your life?
The symptoms of being out of balance are feeling rushed, hurried and anxious as you take on the daily events. When we are out of balance, we find it difficult to enjoy life. Many times poor scheduling dictates the quality our lives. Instead, we need to build a life that reflects our values and priorities. I do believe that it is possible to have it all in a lifetime, but not necessarily at the same time.
What are your obligations and responsibilities? Balancing our lives comes in many different sizes. For one parent finding balance might mean increasing the ability to let others help out, delegating tasks to others or perhaps finding services that can ease day to day responsibilities, such as a pick-up and drop-off laundry service. For another, family balance might mean identifying ways to coordinate the challenges of work with the demands of finding quality family time.
As for me, balance means living a life in accordance with my values. It means making time every day for solitude, family and my personal passion. By prioritizing my time according to the things that I value, I create a life that is abundant. Because I am clear about what I value, my priorities are my litmus test for what I should do next. Balance to me means that I create opportunities to delegate the unnecessary and purge the ridiculous. What about you? When are you at balance?
As parents, it is very easy to become so busy that you forget to hone in and consider what is most important. Here are my seven strategies on balancing your life:
1. Delegate. Create a weekly meeting with your family to discuss household responsibilities. During this time, review household responsibilities and delegate age-appropriate chores. Hold the meeting during the same time each week, and review what is working and what is not. For children under the age of 10 years, provide a goal chart so they can check off each task for accountability.
2. Consider outsourcing the laundry, grocery shopping (there a many grocery stores that deliver) or basic yard work to create more opportunities for quality time.
3. Plan your life. If you want to have days filled with less anxiety, you are going to need to plan in advance the activities of the family, work and other significant items. Planning allows us the necessary time to adjust and be proactive about the choices in our lives. This reduces stress and anxiety.
4. Eliminate what is not working. Look at ways you can add time to your days. What can you live without? Do the children have to go to gymnastics this semester if you have a particularly heavy work load this quarter? Be reasonable.
5. Seek quality not quantity. Identify five activities that you enjoy that take very little effort. Incorporate a movie night on Fridays. Have the movie delivered to your door, add some popcorn and a pizza. This is a wonderful way to have both a quality family event and add no additional stress to your days.
6. Give yourself a break. Be reasonable. Are you trying to work all day, come home to make dinner, clean the dishes, get baths going, read nighttime stories , clean the house and pay the bills in the evening? Ask yourself, is it possible to accomplish any of these items another day?
7. A great way to reduce stress is to exercise. Take a walk with your family three times a week for 20 minutes.
Live Fully,
Mia
Challenge! – Understand that balance means limiting the things that are the source of anxiety and frustration. By adjusting our lives according to our values and priorities we make room for the things that allow us to enjoy life.

What to look for in nourishing hair care Wed, May 27, 2009
Hi, as we are all busy, we need great products- especially for our hair. Ever since my kids were born, my hair has become so much more dry, and finding nourishing, conditioning products is always on my mind. I found some great insight below from Dr. Farid of Drskinpa.com on ingredients to look for in hair care products:
Nina
7 Innovative Ingredients in Nourishing Hair Care by Dr. Farid
As time passes us by, the hair begins to show signs of age, much like the skin does. The hair begins to lose its once shiny appearance. It can also become dry and brittle. These effects are the result of environmental factors that compound over time, as well as a direct influence of age. Among the many products available to fight the signs of aging in hair are several innovative ingredients that are proven to restore shine, strengthen the hair at its root, and create both body and movement.
SPF. One of the most popular elements found in anti-aging hair care products today is protection from the sun. Just like sunscreen, shampoos and conditioners can create a protective coat to stop the effects of the environment. The sun is known to cause over-drying and brittleness in aging hair. Products that contain a moderate level of SPF protection will help to stop this.
Caviar. Caviar is known to contain very high levels of vitamins and essential minerals. Specifically, it has high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, one of the primary ingredients that aging hair lacks. When set in a hair care agent, caviar restores shine and breathes new life into hair that has begun to show signs of aging.
Aloe vera. Often used as a hydrating and healing agent in skincare products, aloe vera is equally effective when used on the hair. It can help to repair a dry damaged scalp, and it also restores shine and body to hair that has been damaged by the sun and the test of time.
Green tea. Green tea is known to have many health benefits in general. It has also made its way into many anti-aging hair care products as well. Packed with antioxidants, green tea is a gentle ingredient that not only cleanses, but delivers essential nutrients to the scalp and hair. It is believed to have both restorative and preventative powers.
Botanicals. Botanicals, which encompass a wide range of plant extracts in general, are hydrating agents that are proven to repair hair that has become dry and brittle due to aging. They are found in many anti-aging hair care products, often in combination with vitamins A, E and C. Botanicals can revitalize both the hair and scalp.
Tea tree oil. This is a hydrating agent commonly found in hair care products. Tea tree oil is known for its long-lasting ability to restore dry damaged hair. It has a soothing effect on the scalp as it calms and hydrates the skin.
Indian gooseberry extract. This is a traditional ingredient that comes from India and has been known to prevent the growth of premature gray hairs and to reduce the appearance of existing ones. Indian gooseberry extract promotes natural and healthy pigmentation in the hair, starting at the root.
Look for these special ingredients that are proven to be effective in anti-aging hair care products. Hair that has lost its luster and youthful body will be restored with regular use of products containing them.

5 Anti-Aging Elements to Make You Look Young Mon, May 11, 2009
Today there are many innovations in skincare. However, many of us don’t really know what the new, key ingredients are that can make a difference. Jack Lam from SimplyAntiAging.info gives us the inside on these amazing ingredients below:
Anti Aging – 5 Anti Aging Elements To Make You Look Young by Jack Lam
In todays world of modern science and technology, you have a choice of five top notch elements that can prevent aging. On top of the list is of course the anti aging serum. This serum works by increasing the production of collagen to make the skin taut and beautiful. Within a matter of four weeks, you will be able to notice the difference. Some people have experienced changes within the first week of using the anti aging serum. The level of enhancement varies among individuals and their skin types.
What are the Best Elements That can Reverse or Slow Down Aging?
The anti aging serum is obviously the number one on the list because not only does it gives the fastest and most visible result but also because it is easy to use. The majority of people have high regards for it because of its results. The top anti aging have retinol and vitamin A as their main ingredients. This is because Retinol and Vitamin A has the ability to make your skin as good as new in a short period of time.
Next on the list would be peptides. Basically, peptides controls the level of collagen produced and hence has the ability to make the skin better. Anti aging creams with peptide elements will make the skin better over a period of regular usage. You will need to applied it regularly to ensure that you continuously send the ‘message’ to your skin to keep on producing colalgen.
The third element is called EGCG or epigallocathechin. EGCG comes from green tea and it is very potent and effective in combating aging. This is why, most Japanese men and women have flawless skin because gree tea is drunk daily just like how some people consume water. epigallocathchin is 100 hundred times more powerful than Vitamin C in combating free radicals in the body and around 25 times more potent than Vitamin E in promoting healthy beautiful skin. Most anti aging serums in the market contain EGCG due to its beautifying properties.
Another great element that can do wonders to your skin is the anti-Botox peptide. It is known as the argireline which can give an instant face life without needles. The anti-Botox peptide works by relaxing the muscles that are responsible for causing wrinkles, very similar to the Botox principle. You will be amazed to find a 30 percent reduction in wrinkles in about 30 days after using this element.
The final element which has been around for centuries is Vitamin C. Vitamin C as we know is famous for its anti-free radical properties. Concentrated anti-aging serum capsules with Vitamin C can easily be found and should be used as a topical application for best results.

Hollywood Mom’s: A Mother’s Day Celebration Mon, May 4, 2009
This week please watch TV Guide Network’s special “Hollywood Mom’s: A Mother’s Day Celebration”. You can catch my segment on hot products for the Hollywood set. It is on all week long, click here for the schedule.
What does Mom really want for Mother’s Day? Mon, May 4, 2009
I have been surveying many of my friends on what they really want on Mother’s Day. The answer was TIME. They want time to themselves, or to be able to pamper themselves. I think we might need to give these hints to our husbands and children (of course a handmade card from our kids is the number one gift!).
Spa gift certificates and home spa sets are the top choices. Be sure to send this post to your husband so he will know exactly what to get you!
Eco-friendly on a budget Sun, April 26, 2009
Along with the economy, green living is on everyone’s minds these days. The good news is that being eco conscious can also help us save money! Below are some of my tips on some ways to save money and keep your family green…
-Nina
Make your own household cleaning supplies:
After having my two sons, I cringed at the chemical scent after cleaning the house. I found some home-made alternatives that not only work, but are budget-friendly too!
Baking soda scrub – cleans grout, sinks, tubs
2 tablespoons baking soda + enough castile soap to create a foamy paste. Use a sponge to treat the affected areas. Leave on surface for up to fifteen minutes, then spray with vinegar and wash down with water.
Glass Cleaner
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water + a few drops of essential oil (a good soothing one to try is lavender)
Fill a spray bottle with the solution. Add as much essential oil as you require to cover the scent of vinegar. Spray and wipe down, leaving your bathroom mirrors and shower doors sparkling.
All-Purpose Cleaner – use on most surfaces including counters and walls
Fill a 16 ounce spray bottle with 2 teaspoons borax, 1/4 teaspoon castile soap and hot water. Simply spray the solution on the surface, let sit for a few minutes, then wipe down with a sponge. For large surfaces such as floors, fill a bucket with a gallon of hot water, one teaspoon baking soda and two tablespoons of castile soap.
Laundry:
Use cold water to clean your clothes. Also, don’t overload the dryer. Clothing will take longer to dry and come out wrinkled. Consider hanging clothing on a drying rack or line-drying them outside on warm days. I line dry all of my clothes- they stay in better shape too.
Electronics:
Unplug televisions and other electronic devices such as DVD players, toaster ovens and mobile phone chargers when they’re not in use. Electronic devices draw energy even when they’re turned off or in standby mode. For convenience, plug electronics into a power strip. One switch cuts down on power and reduces your energy costs.
Thermostat:
During colder months, switch the thermostat to 68 degrees while sleeping or when away. Install a programmable thermostat to automatically raise and lower temperatures. Move the thermostat to an inside wall away from windows and doors, so the heating system is not responding to drafts and cycling unnecessarily (ours was next to our deck sliding glass doors and would kick on every time we opened the door to go out on our deck-so we had to move it).
Taking Care of Your Self-Esteem Fri, April 24, 2009
Many women can suffer from low self-esteem, especially new moms, trying to lose the baby weight, and juggle the demands of motherhood. I think it is so important to take care of that, because it can affect so many things in your life. Below, Aurelia Williams, a life coach, offers some tips on taking care of your self-esteem.
-Nina
Self-Esteem Begins From Inside by Aurelia Williams
Our happiness is directly related to our self-esteem. Self-esteem affects our confidence and general outlook in life. It is however important to note that building our self-esteem is up to each and every one of us.
It may seem easy to just blame others for any self esteem problems that we can encounter. Yes, the way others treat us has an effect on our self-esteem but we need to find a way to overcome challenges that come our way. We are talking about “self” esteem aren’t we?
An easy solution to avoiding those negative vibes around us is to remove ourselves from negative and unfavorable situations. We really do not need to expose ourselves to negativity. But doing that requires some self-esteem on our part, because we must feel that we are worthy of being treated well.
But, how do we improve our self-esteem on our own?
People with low self-esteem do not have any motivation to change their ways. To improve one’s self esteem, the first step to take is to change their way of thinking. A good exercise to do is to make a list of reasons why you like yourself. It is not that difficult. Think hard and sure enough you will come up with a few reasons. One questions to ask your self when getting this list together is “What are some things that you are good at?”
Try your very best not to think about anything negative about yourself as this results to a low self-esteem. The list of reasons why you like yourself will help you overcome any negativity you may be facing. Read your list often, especially when you start doubting yourself and your capabilities. Make this a habit and in time, you will just be naturally positive and have a higher self-esteem.
Here are some other self-esteem boosters:
Don’t be afraid to learn and master new skills. Try a new hobby. Check out different classes offered in your local college. Learning new things can help you pay less attention to negative things you see in your self. Completing projects will give you a sense of accomplishment. This is a wonderful way to boost your self-esteem.
Take care of yourself. Eat well, get some exercise and make sure you have enough sleep. All these things contribute to a great immune system and a better mood. Being in good physical condition allows you to think more clearly and be more relaxed and stress free. You will soon feel you’re self esteem go up.
Face your responsibility. You are in charge of raising your own self-esteem. If your self-esteem is high and you feel good inside then it won’t matter if others show you any negativity. That is what “self” esteem is all about.
If you’re ready to boost your self esteem and live a happier life, I recommend picking up a copy of the Journey To Joy Guide. It’s your place for instant downloadable help, day or night.

A Daily Schedule Can You Keep on Track Sat, April 18, 2009
I don’t know about you… but my life is soooo busy with the kids, husband, social life, volunteering, house, and just trying to have one moment to myself. Getting a lot done requires a pretty disciplined schedule. Read below tips on how a daily schedule can help you keep yourself and your family on track.
- Nina
A Daily Schedule Can Make a Difference by O Quinn
Again as I work to get myself to get back on track after losing control for a few weeks I am amazed at the power behind a simple daily schedule.
In reworking my Home Management binder I’ve had to come up with a new daily schedule. As my daughter grows things change. Much of my time with her is in creative ventures and teaching her how to do things. I can get very caught up in that.
But enough about that. What really happened is I got so engrossed with working with my soon to be preschooler that I kind of threw my schedule out the window. Some things were no longer done on certain days or done at all so as a result I dismissed my usual pattern of checking my daily schedule throughout the day or when I felt unproductive.
The result? Chaos.
Well okay not complete chaos but I could definitely tell a difference. I wasn’t sure where it was coming from but things were not as orderly as I liked them. Dinner was often late, the house wasn’t getting vacuum regularly, I felt like I had no time to do anything (but play with my daughter) and even my baby girl seemed a little out of sorts.
After a few weeks of this I thought maybe it was time for me to get serious about updating my Home Management binder. I reworked a new daily and weekly schedule to get me going and….
Voila!
The difference is like night and day. As I sit here mid-afternoon while my daughter takes her nap, and type yet another article (my third for the day) I have already washed 2 loads of laundry, straightened and vacuumed the house, straightened and inventoried the fridge and freezer in preparation for menu planning tomorrow. The kitchen is clean and tidy, in addition to the other rooms because I do walk through morning and night. I won’t get into all of the other things that are taken care of simply because my schedules reminded me that they needed to be done (so I did them) but I will tell you most of all I don’t feel frazzled.
I still have things to do. Work and home alike but I don’t feel out of control or overwrought because I know where they fall in my schedule.
Making a daily and weekly schedule is one of the most simple things you can do to start organizing yourself and your home. You see your list helps you to organize yourself because it’s a reminder in our all too busy lives of what needs to be done to keep things moving smoothly. And once you make your list USE it. Check it at least daily. It does no good unless you put it to use. If you can only muster one ounce of energy make it to check that list.

Getting long and healthy nails Mon, April 13, 2009
As moms, we use (and abuse) our hands all the time… from bathing the kids to doing the dishes, it can really take a toll. I wanted to share some tips on to get long and healthy nails naturally. Check out the interesting tips from Mercedes Aspland from the U.K.:
- Nina
How to get Long and Healthy Nails by Mercedes Aspland
Most of us know that great looking nails can create a good impression on other people. However nail growth can be a problem for some of us, but there are things you can do that will help. The aim of this article is to give you some advice and tips on how to get long and healthy nails, whatever condition they are in now.
The first thing to say might seem obvious but a lot of people don’t think about it. Remember not to bit your nails. Firstly biting your nails can cause them damage and obviously it will make them shorter. You may find that biting them regularly means that they just do not grow so you need to make sure you stop this immediately. If you have a problem stopping try applying a varnish this should make them harder to bite and they won’t taste great either.
Give your nails a salt water bath at least every other day. This is very simple to do and what they usually do in a salon. It is a good idea to do it before you go to bed and all you need to do is boil some water and add a couple of teaspoons of salt. When the salt has dissolved and the water is lukewarm just place your nails in the water for around 10 minutes. This salt water bath will not only help to nourish your nails, making them stronger but it will also encourage them to grow faster.
Once you have soaked your nails you now need to remove the cuticles. You can use a small stick to push back the cuticles and then some nail clippers to remove them. This should be quite easy as they will be very soft after the soaking. Be very careful when doing this to make sure you don’t cut into the nail bed. You now need to buff your nails. You can get a nail buffer in most decent cosmetic shops. This will help to remove and remaining cuticle and it will also smooth any parts of your nail that may be uneven.
Once you have removed your cuticles and fully buffed your nails you now need to protect them. There are some really good cuticle creams that you can get. Look for one that is full of vitamins and nutrients. Apply a small amount to the each of your nails and the skin around your nails. Make sure you rub it in properly and gently massage the skin around the nail. This will help to speed up nail growth.
It is also a good idea to apply some vitamin E to your nails. This can be done 2 or 3 times a week and will really benefit your nails and make them stronger. This is very easy to do, all you need to do is break a vitamin E capsule and rub the oil into your nails, again making sure you massage the area around the nail.
Make sure you always carry your nail file with you. If you chip a nail make sure you done pull any remaining part off. Use your nail file to sort it out and keep your nails looking great. Any pulling or tearing will only damage your nails. Remember when you wash your hands to dry them after. Allowing them to dry naturally will only dehydrate your nails and damage them long term.
